Passing On

Steve was born April 3, 1940 in Grace, ID and passed away on August 16, 2011 at his home in Magnolia Texas. He is survived by his wife of 32 years Peggy Hawker, his brother Kyle (Valerie) Hawker, and his sister Sandee (Jim) Wilson, his sons Martin (Jill) Hawker, Cory Hawker, and Rick (Terry) York, his daughters Wendy (Nick) Hinck and Stephanie (Gunner) Jordan, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Steve was welcomed to this world by his parents Marion and Glenys Hawker in Grace and the family lived in Soda Springs, ID where Steve spent his younger years before joining the Air Force. Steve worked as a Personnel Agent in Soda Springs during the 60’s providing workers for Ref Chem Construction, Monsanto, and other industries in the area.

Steve relocated to Pocatello, ID in the early 70’s and began his long time career in the car sales industry. Steve was an avid outdoorsman. He was a competitive snow machine racer with the Sno-Drifters club and he loved to hunt deer, elk, antelope or anything with four legs or wings with his Dad. Some of his favorite fishing spots are just outside of Soda Springs like Diamond Creek and Tin Cup where he could be found with his family most weekends during the summer months. Steve and Peggy moved to Houston, TX in 1983. Steve found his second career in the mortgage banking business. He retired in 2003 when he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Golf... He loved relaxing at home in front of the TV with the Western Channel always playing.

Stephen had great memories of Soda Springs and the history of that area and to listen to him share these memories was a treat. He was a friend to so many in his life and will be missed by all.

Condolences and comments/experiences are welcomed and can be posted on his Facebook page or on

THIS WAS FUN!!!! Steve was so sad he couldn't be with Bob Shelton, Jim and me

to watch this BSU game so I JUST HAD TO crop a picture I had of him and blow it up and print it.

There Steve is in his BSU shirt watching the game with Bobby... I called him and told him I'd

e-mailed him something special when we got home. He was so tickled!!!
Steve went fishing and asked our grandson, Caleb, if he'd like to help him clean the fish,
Caleb Just loved it.

Steve and I put the cabinet together behind us. It was really fun, reading directions
and spending quality time together- as we did so often.

"I LOVE YOU STEPHEN HAWKER"

I always said that on the phone or at the end of an e-mail, and he would say, "I love you too sis!"

"The biggest fish I'd ever seen"

I have many memories of Steve, I would like to share them all but in my aging state of mind my recovery portion of my brain is not cooperating.
I do remember going to Soda as A young boy and spending many summers there & loved every minute of it. Marion & Glenys treated me as their own as did Stephen ( I always called him Stephen ) Kyle And Sandee I love them all as my siblings.
I remember your Dad being in the construction business & Steve was going to show me how to drive a truck & front end loader , as you would expect the training didn't go well and ended up doing damage to the equipment, I didn't get in trouble but Steve did , He covered up for me & told his dad it was he who did it.
They also taught me how to fish, I think it was eight mile creek,Steve showed me how to get worms off of the creek bank and sneak up on the fish as not to scare them. Marion always had a large freezer full of the biggest fish I had ever seen that he caught on Blackfoot, I used to marvel at them & wanted to learn how to catch them Steve said he would show me as he was the one who caught them, we did back yard training , but I never got to the reservoir . a few years later we did get to Chesterfield & caught smaller fish.
One summer Steve came to Ogden to stay with us, it was around 1957 0r 58 . we were just starting up a new car club called the Stags and I let Steve drag the vard with me and my buddies, we would race from light to light smoking the tires hooting and hollering , chasing girls, and I never will forget how much fun he was having he had that big grin as only he could have smiling from ear to ear . I remember him talking about that for years after. loved that guy.
He loved the 50s & 60s we used to exchange emails of the good old days I am really going to miss him.
Love to all,,,,,,,:-D Cousin Dean & Suzie

Remembering Uncle Steve

I have been digging thru my photos this morning and I was pleasantly surprised that I have quite a few pictures with Uncle Steve in them. Above is a picture of Daddy, Aunt Sandee, and Uncle Steve when they were little tykes. I love how happy their eyes are in that picture. Daddy has such fun stories to tell about growing up, he idolized his big brother and, like all big brothers, they loved teasing Aunt Sandee :)

The first thing I remember about Uncle Steve was that he was handsome and laughed a lot and he was fun. He was always nice to all of us little nieces, I think I remember he gave me gum.

It was always so much fun to visit Grandma and Grandpa Hawker in Soda, and when Uncle Steve was there too it was even more fun.

These pictures are from Grandma's birthday party shortly before she died. It was a great blessing that we got to go up and spend time with her at her party and see all the family. I have lots of pictures of this party and in almost all of them, Uncle Steve is in the back ground talking to people and smiling. He loved his family, especially his Mom.

What I remember best about Uncle Steve is sitting around eating and talking. He told great stories!

I am grateful and honored to be his niece. He was a good man and very loved.

Steve Hawker Memorial

Submitted by Kyle Hawker 17 August 2011
I have so many loving memories of my big brother Steve, it’s hard to know where to start. My earliest memories are of growing up in Soda Springs Idaho. Being my big brother and being someone that does not turn away from “injustice”, he was my protector. Even though he was not a “muscle man”, he was a scrapper when the occasion arose. I was somewhat small in stature and a bit more timid when it came to being accosted by bullies. My bro made certain that if anyone was going to bully me, they would have to answer to him!
I remember a little about our short time in Pocatello. Steve and I were in a park playing on a concrete wall and a newspaper reporter and photographer came by and snapped a photo of us that appeared in the Pocatello paper. That must have been about 1946 time frame.
I remember how we did paper routes and lawn mowing services together. When we mowed lawns, the push lawn mower handle was too tall for me to reach, so would be at the bottom of the mower pushing at the yoke while he was pushing at the handle. We worked together to build our “business” and mowed lots of lawns around Soda Springs.
I remember how he and Kelly Izatt and other “ruffians” formed the “Motor Maulers Club” while they were in High School and how neat they looked in their James Dean leather jackets with the Motor Mauler insignia on the back. I think that even though Kelly was the Police Chief in Soda Springs until his death in late 1999, he was still a “Motor Mauler” at heart.
I remember how proud I was of my big brother when he served in the Air Force. My first extended out of state road trip was with Dad and Mom and Sandee when we drove across country clear to the most Southern part of Texas to visit him. He was very impressive in his role to protect our great nation. That was the first time that I was able to see the ocean. It was old hat to him by then, but impressive to me.

More memories to come………………… BTW, whenever we return to Soda Springs and meet people there, I always have to introduce myself as “Steve Hawker’s Brother” for anyone to know who I am.
